Of dragons and Dornishmen…

A Dance with Dragons has been slow going. I’m about halfway through, but it’s also halfway through January, so progress has been slower than I expected. I had forgotten what an engaging writer GRRM is, but I also forgot how tedious certain viewpoints can be. In the case of this book, Davos chapters take the wind right out of my sails. I’ll groan, put it down to fold some laundry or something, and get sidetracked in other things for the rest of the night.

It’s not that his chapters are not as well written, because they certainly are. I can’t say exactly why, but for whatever reason, I’m just not interested in anything from his or anyone from the Iron Islands (ZZZzzzZZZ) perspective. That being said, there are some exciting things  happening in the other chapters and I can’t wait to pick up with Tyrion tonight.

While we’re on the subject, Game of Thrones season 4 trailer was released this weekend. If you’re a fan, you were all over this on Sunday, but it’s worth another viewing (or dozen). Other than dragons (obviously), I think I’m most excited to see Oberyn Martell–see the 1:05 to 1:10 marks. “Lannisters aren’t the only ones who pay their debts.” Chills! Of all the places in Westeros, Dorne is my favorite one to read about, so I’m looking forward to seeing it realized on the screen.

What are you hoping to see in Season 4?

  1. I can’t wait for you to finish up ADWD, so I can talk to you about my favorite character. I might be the only person that likes him.

Hang in there! And thanks for the posting the trailer. I’m also super happy to see the Red Viper this season.

    • dog-eared & foxing

Ok I finally finished!! What character were you referring to? I’d venture a guess that it’s Connington, only because a few other people I know are really into him.

      • Okay, my favorite character from book five is Quentyn Martell.

SPOILERS for anyone who has not read Book 5, look away, yo.

Quentyn was my favorite in Book 5 because:
        1) he’s Dornish,
        2) he was kind of an average guy so I was rooting for him, and
        3) because I was invested in his story… I was kind of hoping that things would work out for him, and nope. You would think I’d learn my lesson.

  2. dog-eared & foxing

I did like Quentyn a lot, but alas, he was a decent human being which makes him unfit to play the game of thrones. I didn’t think it would work out for him because things would go too smoothly if Dany hooked up with the Dornish. I think she’s going to have to sell her soul a little bit and get in bed with the Iron Islands. (Blech)
