The Giver: the one that started it all…

AKA, the post in which I’m apparently living under a rock.

So, I’m in the book section of my local Target yesterday when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly featuring Sherlock on the cover. I am straight up Sherlocked so I grab it and start flipping. Only, it isn’t Cumberbatch (I just love his name) who stops me in my tracks, but an article featuring a first look at the film adaptation of The Giver.

Did anyone else know this was happening? How did I not know this was happening? And with the likes of Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep (eep!), Alexander Skarsgard, and apparently Taylor Swift? (I’ll leave the jury out on Swift for now…)

The thing is, Lois Lowry’s The Giver is the book that started it all for me. Long before Harry Potter or Goosebumps were even a thought in my mind, there was The Giver. Before The Giver, I’d read the occasional Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary. My favorite book back then was Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. Mostly because I could commiserate. I hated the damn school bus and if I ever got locked in my school after hours you’d best believe I’d go ape-shit on the school supplies. But reading was a CHORE then. Something I had to do for school.

Then, in 1994, my 4th grade teacher began reading The Giver aloud to us a chapter at a time in the 15 minutes before the bell rang for the day. That time became the highlight of my everything. I LIVED for those 15 minutes. Then, for reasons I don’t remember or were never shared in the first place, she stopped. In the middle of the book, no resolution, she just stopped. Well I marched my geeky little self down to the library and checked the book out for myself–I had to know what happened, how could she leave me hanging like that!?

I haven’t stopped reading since.

I don’t remember the specifics, but I’ll never forget the way that I felt while reading it as a kid. I think a visit to my old favorite is long over due.
